Under Pressure: Blood Pressure Explained
Two numbers, one cuff, and most people (me included, for years) have no idea what either number actually measures beyond “the top one should be lower.”
The two numbers
Systolic, the top number, is the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. Diastolic, the bottom number, is the pressure between beats, while the heart rests. Both matter, and a problem in either direction is worth attention, not just a high systolic reading.
What actually moves the needle
Sodium intake, sleep quality, stress, alcohol, and activity level all shift blood pressure more than people expect, sometimes within the same day. One high reading at a stressful appointment isn’t a diagnosis. A pattern over weeks is.
When it matters
Consistently elevated numbers, especially with a family history, are worth tracking and discussing with an actual doctor, not a blog. What I’ve taken from learning the numbers is mostly this: it’s not a single event, it’s a trend, and trends are things you can actually act on.
