The Dark Side: Transitioning to the Dudes' Side of the Gym
Group classes and home workouts have a low barrier to entry: someone tells you what to do, or a video does. The free-weight floor has no instructions, a lot of unfamiliar equipment, and a culture that can feel like it wasn’t built with you in mind.
What was actually intimidating
Not knowing the names of things. Not knowing where to stand. Not knowing if I was “allowed” to work in on a rack someone else was using. None of it was really about strength, it was about not speaking the room’s unwritten rules yet.
What changed it
Learning a small number of moves properly, on a schedule, made the space legible. Once I knew what a rack was for and how work-ins actually go, most of the intimidation turned out to be a language barrier, not a real barrier.
Where I’m at
I still don’t love a packed Monday evening. But the free-weight section stopped being “the dudes’ side of the gym” and just became the part of the gym with the equipment I actually need.
