On the Scale: Stay on the Good Side of Nutrients
The number on the scale answers one question and gets asked ten others. It can’t tell you if you got enough protein this week, or whether your iron is running low, or if you’ve eaten a vegetable since Tuesday.
What the scale misses
Two people can hit the same number on the scale with completely different nutrient intakes, one under-fueled and deficient, the other adequately nourished. Weight is an outcome measure, not a quality measure.
What I track instead
- Protein most days, not perfect, just present
- Some variety in produce across the week, not a single “safe” vegetable on repeat
- Iron, B12, vitamin D, the ones that quietly run low without symptoms until they don’t
Where I land
The scale still has a place, but it’s one data point among several, not the whole report card. Staying on the good side of nutrients has done more for how I actually feel than any number has.
