Physical Goals: I'll Tell You What I Want, What I Really, Really Want (To Pistol Squat)
For most of my life my goals were numbers on a scale or a mirror check. They never held my attention for long, because they weren’t really goals, they were just anxieties with a due date.
The switch
Somewhere along the way I swapped “lose weight” for “do a pull-up.” Then a pistol squat. Then a handstand hold. Ability goals turned out to be stickier, because progress is visible and specific: you either got the rep today or you didn’t.
What changed with the switch
Training stopped being punishment for what I ate and started being practice toward something I actually wanted to be able to do. Mobility work stopped being optional once it was clearly the thing standing between me and a full-depth pistol squat.
Where I’m at
Pull-ups: there. Handstand hold: getting there. Pistol squat: still humbling. But I’d rather chase a skill for years than chase a number I never actually wanted in the first place.
