How I Talk Myself Into Going to the Gym
Most days I don’t want to go. That never changed, no matter how consistent I got. What changed is that I stopped waiting to want to.
The two-minute rule
I don’t negotiate about the whole workout, just the first two minutes: shoes on, out the door, or bag packed. Almost every time, showing up is the hard part. Once I’m there, finishing is easy.
Lowering the bar on purpose
On the worst days, the deal I make with myself isn’t “go hard,” it’s “just show up and do something, even a short version.” That permission to do less is usually what gets me through the door, and once I’m in, I rarely actually do less.
What stopped working
Relying on motivation. Waiting to feel ready. Both are unreliable and neither shows up consistently enough to build a habit on. Systems get me there. Motivation is just a nice bonus on the days it happens to appear.
What actually helps
- A set time, so it’s not a daily decision
- Clothes ready the night before, one less step between me and the door
- A tiny minimum I’m always allowed to hit, even on bad days
- Remembering that I have never once regretted going, only skipping
