The Balance Between the Protein Fans and the Veggie Lovers
Every health corner online seems split into two camps: protein-first, chasing grams and macros, or veggie-first, chasing fiber and plants. Both sides have a point, and neither has the whole picture.
The protein case
Protein keeps you full, protects muscle, and most people (especially anyone active or over 40) eat less of it than they think. Chasing a protein target is a reasonable, evidence-backed habit.
The veggie case
Vegetables and fiber do the quiet work: gut health, micronutrients, satiety without the calorie load, and a lower risk profile for a long list of chronic conditions. No amount of protein substitutes for that.
Where the balance sits
This isn’t either/or. A plate built around a protein source and a pile of vegetables covers both bases at once. The fight is mostly a marketing problem, not a nutrition one.
My actual approach: protein at every meal, vegetables at every meal, and I stop optimizing past that.
