Pilates vs. Weights: Let the Fight Begin
Ask five people which is “better,” pilates or weight training, and you’ll get five confident, contradictory answers. Having done both seriously, I think the fight itself is the wrong framing.
What pilates actually gives you
Core control, posture, mobility, and a kind of body awareness that heavy lifting doesn’t teach on its own. It’s slower, and that’s the point.
What weights actually give you
Strength that shows up everywhere else: carrying groceries, getting up off the floor, bone density that matters more with every year. Nothing replaces progressive load.
The actual answer
They’re not competing for the same job. Pilates without any strength work leaves you mobile but weak. Heavy lifting without any mobility work eventually catches up with you. I do both, on different days, and stopped waiting for someone to declare a winner.
