My Fitness Journey: Moving to the Scary Side of the Gym

Every gym has one: the section with the barbells, the mirrors, and the people who look like they know exactly what they’re doing. For a long time that section was invisible to me. I stayed on the machines, on the treadmill, anywhere I couldn’t be watched.

What actually happened

Nobody looked at me. That was the first surprise. The second was how much better strength training felt compared to another hour of cardio I was doing mostly out of guilt.

What helped

  • Going at off-peak hours first, so the room was half-empty
  • Learning three lifts properly instead of trying to learn everything at once
  • Writing numbers down, so progress was visible even when it felt slow

Where I’m at now

Still learning, still checking form in the mirror more than I’d like to admit. But the fear was bigger than the section ever was.
